Changing Kids’ Lives Through Financial Education
Welcome to the 2022 first quarter RMJ Foundation Newsletter
FINANCIAL EDUCATION
April is Financial Capability Month! While we like to think every month is Financial Capability / Literacy / Education Month at the RMJ Foundation, it’s great to see a strong focus on such an important topic throughout the month. There are so many activities credit unions can offer to engage their communities during this month (and all year long!). Our own Bite of Reality® is a great place to start. As well, Biz Kid$, a PBS television show exclusively underwritten by credit unions, offers plenty of activities and lesson plans to go with the episodes. You can learn more about Biz Kid$ by clicking here.
Bite of Reality ®
With more and more schools in California and Nevada allowing volunteers on campus, credit unions have begun to facilitate in-person Bite of Reality events. In February and March there have been 11 in-person events in California and Nevada reaching more than 1,300 students. We are still receiving requests for the virtual version of the program, and we’ll continue to offer the virtual version if there is still a demand.
Don’t forget to tag RMJ when posting on your LinkedIn (@RMJ Foundation), Twitter (@RMJFoundation), or other social media sites. We love sharing about your Bite of Reality events as well as all the great ways credit unions are bringing financial education to their communities.
BOR Workshops
On February 9th we virtually held our semi-annual facilitators workshop for our California and Nevada facilitators. We had 43 attendees join us to discuss financial education programs, Bite of Reality2 app updates, and event best practices. We will be hosting another workshop in the fall. If you are interested attending, please contact Jenn Lucas at [email protected]
We will be hosting a virtual two-part facilitator training on Wednesday May 11, and Thursday May 12. This training is great for folks that are new to the Bite of Reality program, or for those who could use a refresher. Day one we will cover preparing for an event, program materials, event timing/ flow, and how the BOR2 app works. On day two, we will discuss the facilitator’s role, making returns and other app functions, and volunteer training. For more information contact Jenn Lucas at [email protected]
BIZ Kid$ Showcase
The 2022 Biz Kid$ Showcase will take place this fall! RMJ is teaming up with the National Credit Union Foundation again this year for the 2022 Biz Kid$ Showcase. Teens can show off their entrepreneurial skills to win cash prizes in their state and have the chance to compete at the national level. Last year’s California winner went on to win 1st place at the national level! This is a great opportunity for credit unions to work with schools in their communities to help students showcase their business ideas. Check the RMJ website this fall for further details.
