Changing Kids’ Lives Through Financial Education
THIRD QUARTER 2020
Welcome to the RMJ Foundation Newsletter
Financial Education Updates Bite of Reality: The pandemic and remote learning are still with us, and so is the remote version of Bite of Reality. We’re continuing to make the remote version of the Bite of Reality App available nationwide so credit unions can continue to deliver financial education to their communities. If you have not seen a demo of the remote version and are interested please contact Jenn Lucas at info@rmjfoundation.org.
Pre-Post Test Data: In January of this year, we added pre- and post-test questions to the Bite of Reality App. It is a set of 5 questions that participants answer at the beginning and the end of the simulation. This provides a tangible data set that credit unions can use in their advocacy efforts—by showing in real terms the results of their significant efforts of delivering reality fairs in their communities. Below is a summary of the data collected in the first half of 2020. |
Bite of Reality2 App: In August we launched an upgrade to our Bite of Reality2 App. This new version includes:
- Changes to the return flow. You can complete a return as you have done in the past, and you can now also complete a return and new purchase within the return screen function.
- New occupations and Fickle Finger of Fate events. We replaced some of the outdated occupations and FFF events with more current and trending occupations like Social Media Influencer and FFF like, “You broke your cell phone screen.”
- A credit score for each participant. These scores run from 450 to 800 and are randomly assigned to each participant. If at an event two participants have the same persona, they will have different credit scores. The assigned credit score may affect their purchases at the Housing and Transportation stations.
RMJ/Origence Golf Tournament
On August 10, 2020, we held our annual RMJ / Origence Golf Tournament. A giant thanks to all of this year’s sponsors and golfers! Approximately 70 golfers came out to play and raised more than $80,000 for financial education! Congratulations to Chuck Morris, Jeff Madland, Scott Rains, and Bob Thompson , representing Eagle Community Credit Union, who won the tournament with the lowest overall score. Chuck Morris also won the closest to the pin challenge. Mark your calendars, next year’s tournament will be held on August 9, 2021. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year. |
Credit Union Train
With the LA County Fair cancelled, we turned our Credit Union Train into an online event. We have 18 credit unions that are participating, raising more than $8,000 to support RMJ. Visit our website or check us out on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn until the Credit Union Train ends on September 27. |

Annual SCUF Conference: In July, RMJ staff attended the annual State Credit Union Foundation Network Conference. It is always a pleasure to attend and share great ideas with the National Credit Union Foundation as well as other state credit union foundations from around the country. We joined various virtual meetings discussing how foundations can support their credit unions and fundraise during the pandemic. There was also discussion on how we can continue to impact our communities with different ways to deliver financial education.
